Joule's patented MBES system introduces an innovative approach to energy storage and generation. This system utilizes a Modulated Buoyancy Unit (MBU) connected in a vertical loop to both a surface and an anchor base, forming a unique vertical carousel that links to a generation module.

To store energy, the system compresses air inside the MBU's outer shell using energy from the grid, reducing its buoyancy to 0%, causing it to sink to the ocean floor. To release the stored energy, air is reintroduced into the MBU's outer shell, restoring its buoyancy to 100% and causing it to rise to the surface. As the MBU ascends, it generates energy, which is then fed back into the grid.

The MBES system is environmentally friendly, avoiding the use of precious metals and hazardous materials. It operates similarly to pumped hydro storage but without the need for varying elevations, thereby conserving land resources. Situated in the ocean, it eliminates the requirement for freshwater, making it an efficient and sustainable solution. Additionally, its ease of deployment results in significant time and cost savings.
